Jim Irvin

TOPLINE SONGWRITER.

Jim Irvin is a versatile songwriter who has enjoyed a unique career across multiple areas of the music business.

Born and raised in West London, at 18 he was the singer in the British indie band, Furniture, and wrote their classic hit single, "Brilliant Mind". In the mid '90s he diverted into music journalism, becoming the founding features editor of MOJO Magazine, editing an acclaimed book, The MOJO Collection, and, more recently, co-writing a biography of Jeff Buckley.

After producing and writing with '90s bands Gay Dad and Clearlake, Irvin returned to full-time songwriting in 2001, signing to Warner Chappell and concentrating initially on dance music, co-writing Michael Gray's smash, "The Weekend", and having work recorded by David Guetta and Groove Armada.

Since then, Irvin has brought his lyrical and melodic skills, and extraordinary musical knowledge, to a wide variety of collaborations, among them Lana Del Rey ("This Is What Makes Us Girls”), Gabrielle Aplin (“Start Of Time”), Gavin DeGraw (“Every Little Bit”), Jack Savoretti (“Lifetime”), The Amazons (“Doubt It”) and You Me At Six (“Suckapunch”). He worked with Unloved on their acclaimed Heartbreak album, which included music for the TV show “Killing Eve” and has written with Anne-Marie, TMS, MNEK, BLOXX, Jess Glynne, Ella Eyre, James Bay and Becky Hill.

"I enjoy working across all genres, in and out of my comfort zone," says Jim. "Whoever you write with, the challenge is to find a sweet spot where everyone connects to discover something nobody was expecting. I like to encourage artists to stick out rather than fit in. It’s the biggest thrill to come up with something original that you know is going to jump out of the music we hear every day.”

With frequent writing and producing partner, Julian Emery, Jim has developed long-standing relationships with several artists, most notably US singer, Lissie, ”When I'm Alone" - named Song of the Year 2010 by ITunes UK , "In Sleep", “Shameless”, "Further Away”, “They All Want You”, and “Peace”, among others, and British band Nothing But Thieves, having contributed to over 20 songs, including key tracks, “Trip Switch” (US#1 Alternative), “Graveyard Whistling”, “Sorry”, “Design”, “You Know Me Too Well”, “Phobia”, “Real Love Song” and “Impossible”, the last two being named Songs Of The Year 2020 by listeners to Radio X.

Jim has recently entered into a new joint venture with Peer Music. His Moonflower Songs imprint will be developing and publishing emerging artists of all kinds. “I’m looking for ideas I’ve not heard before, artists with vision, writers with ambition and songs that stop me in my tracks.”
